Jill Sorathia, neighborhood sidewalk

"A city sidewalk by itself is nothing. It is an abstraction." This photo is a neighborhood sidewalk. How is it any different than a city sidewalk? There is interaction within strangers in a city sidewalk, but in a neighborhood sidewalk, this concrete still forms relationships among the people who live around you.

i think this image is very interesting. the minivan butt in the foreground makes me think about jane jacob's wierd take on cars and traffic. on page 7, she says that cars are not the cause of city problems but the "symptom." i think this is difficult to think about since she also says that there are a lot of factors that contribute to the causes of things, or that explain why things are problems or why they happen, but here she seems to say that cars aren't even factors, just an effect (like how a fever is a symptom of many different kinds of illnesses). anyhow, this image is interesting, because in southern california, cars are the problem (and she does acknowledge this), and in this suburban photo of the suburban sidewalk, cars are a problem in a different way, when it seems like they are a reason to keep kids off sidewalks and streets. it makes me think about all of the extra safety measures in irvine. like how certain traffic lights and crosswalks drive me crazy because they seem unnecessary. this is also interesting because the good planners of irvine would say that they are planning around and for the cars in the future years. no one can plan for the price/crisis of gas, though....
